Hi Mary

Hear you loud and clear across the oceans !

I got myself a little battery of ready responses to unhelpful doubters of Moodle (you know, the ones that first look at WHAT IS WRONG not what they could use things for) at http://human.edublogs.org/2008/10/09/top-5-myths-about-teaching-with-moodle/
They speak a lot to what you speak of here...

However, much like you I remain a helpful doubter of anything that gets in the way of claims to improve the art of teaching.

Regards & thanks for your insights.

Hi Jose - email me if you need more specific info but in the meantime - point them in the direction of our Moodle http://vle.olchs.lancs.sch.uk and go to All Courses - the ones with the little face icon are open access so they could have a look. The main point is that it functions both as a website/showcase on the open front page and also a VLE. We do have a website at http://www.olchs.lancs.sch.uk but it is static - more of a prospectus really - and soon will become a part of the Moodle (as a book, in fact, linked to from the front page). I suggest you join the VLE/Moodle forum at www.effectiveict.co.uk where there are other keen Moodlers !

Mary, you make a compelling case. I have recently been included in my school's ICT committee and will be having a meeting with SMT after the holidays regarding our awful website, which was created using an awful content management system called EasySite. I want to present to them the idea of substituting it with a VLE, such as Moodle. Can you direct me to websites that might offer real examples of what Moodle can do, so I can show them the light? Many thanks.
